Heat and its effect on the well-being of the dog

Well, we have been enjoying the warm rays of the sun for some time now. People are very happy that they don't have to wear thick clothes anymore, that a real summer has hit Latvia. But people very often do not think about what this heat does to our four-legged friends.

Heat and sunny days can be difficult for our pets as they also suffer from heatstroke. It is important to understand that it is not so easy for dogs to regulate their body temperature during these hot days. Therefore, it is very important to take care of your four-legged friend and provide him with a comfortable and safe environment during this hot weather.

One of the most dangerous risks in the heat is heatstroke. This can occur when a dog's body temperature rises too quickly and it cannot get rid of this heat effectively. Canine heat stroke is a very serious health problem that can lead to heart problems, brain damage or even the death of the dog. It is therefore important to ensure that the dog is kept in the shade, has access to fresh water and is never left in the car in hot weather. The interior of the car heats up very quickly and the dog has no way to hide. The open slats do not provide enough air flow to protect the dog.

Another important aspect is walking the dog in hot weather. Hot asphalt can be dangerous for a dog because it can burn his paws. It is important to choose paths that are in the shade during walks or to use special dog shoes for your dog that will protect you from the heat. If during the walk the dog pulls the leash towards the grass and wants to walk there, let him, he is trying to show you that it is difficult for him to walk on the asphalt. To make it easier for you to understand when the asphalt is too hot - take off your shoes and stand on the asphalt or press your hand to the asphalt, if your hand/foot gets hot quickly, this asphalt is too hot for the dog.

If the dog does overheat, it is important to act quickly. First, you need to contact your veterinarian to get the help you need. To help the animal, you can take him away from the map, try to lower his body temperature using ice packs and cold water.

As a dog owner, you need to understand when is the best time for your dog to go for a walk or exercise. In the summer season, I recommend changing your daily routine - walks and training in the early hours of the morning, short walks during the day in a shady place, evening walks and training when the air is already cooler.

Remember - the dog cannot say that he is sick or too hot, it is your task as the owner to take care of the dog's well-being.
